I have decided to ski the American Birkebeiner to raise money for Free the Slaves. For those of you unfamiliar with the "Birkie", it is a 54-kilometer cross-country ski marathon held each February in Hayward, Wisconsin. This year's event takes place February 21st, 2009. You can find out more information about the race at www.birkie.com.
Free the Slaves has a plan to end slavery over the next 25 years. You can read about the plan on their website www.freetheslaves.net. It is an ambitious, yet realizable goal. Meeting this goal will require a tremendous amount of financial support. Please consider sponsoring my ski so that we can end slavery once and for all. I would like to have your pledge as soon as possible. Once the race is complete, I will send you an update and instructions on where to send your pledge. All donations are fully tax deductible. My goal is to raise $5000. I can't do it without your help. Thanks in advance for your support!
You can donate by credit card on my Facebook page. Copy and paste the link below into your internet browser.

Long absence
Sorry for such a long absence from this blog. Just because I haven't updated it, doesn't mean exciting things aren't taking place.
First of all, anyone who lives in the metro area should mark their calendars for a great event on January 22nd at the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis from 6pm - 9pm. It is a film showing and panel discussion that includes Kevin Bales, the man who started Free the Slaves. Find more information at www.soroptimistmpls.org. Don't miss it!
I have been asked to become the Minnesota Point Person for Free the Slaves. Essentially, this means I am available to show films, give presentations, and do general fundraising for Free the Slaves throughout Minnesota. I have my first speaking engagement lined up for February 28th at 1pm. I'll be giving a presentation at the Northwestern Book Store in Lakeville, MN. I am also planning a fundraiser in Red Wing sometime near the world anti-slavery day in late February. I am thinking of a pancake breakfast called Flippin' for Freedom, but if anyone has some ideas, please send them my way. So now that I am a point person, I would love to come and make a presentation to your church, school group, card group, mom's group, meetup group, you get the picture. The presentation is 95% educational and 5% asking for money. Its a great way to bring awareness to this terrible topic. Please keep me in mind!
